For previous years’ winter solstice cards, I’ve felt a pull to recognize the ways that we can surrender to the season’s darkness and also to the (blessedly inevitable) return of the sun. This year I couldn’t imagine creating a card that wasn’t explicitly about action: about fighting for justice for and with each other. I believe that our collective participation in that fight is what can bring the light back even in the bleakest and darkest of times.

When I was illustrating this card, I was thinking about representing the light from the sun, our closest star. And then when I put it on press, I realized that it also looks like many candles being lit from a centerpoint. I thought about the people holding those candles, standing in a circle, looking at each other, committing to fight for each other and against f a s c I s t & colonial violence. We can be those people. We need to be those people. Because when we fight for justice, we bring back the light.

I printed these on my Heidelberg Windmill in September 2025.
